Restoration of Mau Forest
The Mau forest complex is Kenya’s largest closed-canopy forest and crucial component of the country water towers spanning approximately 416,542 hectares.
It support a wide range of ecological, economic and social functions.
Ecological importance of Mau forest is the source of numerous rivers, including the Mara, Sondu and Ewaso ngiro which is essential for millions of Kenyans and support critical ecosystem such as lake Victoria and the Serengeti Maasai Mara ecosystem.It accounts for over 60% of the water in the Rifty valley and western Kenya and sustain key sectors like agriculture, hydropower generation and tourism.
Biodiversity hotspot, home to indigenous flora and fauna including endemic and endangered species.
It’s plays a big role in carbon sequestration, climate regulation and mitigating the effects of climate change.
